July 2019 - Modern and Classic

This year the world is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus. Founded in Weimar, Germany, in 1919 by Walter Gropius, it attracted a who’s who of architects, artists and designers and became the most influential modernist art school in the 20th century. The Bauhaus is remembered for its belief that architecture, interior design and so called applied arts like textiles and woodmaking should be on par with fine arts like painting and sculpture. Many of the artists working there, like Josef and Anni Albers, Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky used a palette of red, blue and yellow primary colors and black and white, and played with geometric forms throughout their careers. This month’s color story plays with that modern, yet classic palette and graphic patterns. Our blue and yellow color ways are shown in Breeze and Cozy and our Palette bouclé texture is featured in red, black and white. Crisp geometric Sunbrella Contract® patterns Confetti and In Repeat play with Bauhaus’ favorite themes of squares and rectangles. The Bauhaus also admired functionality and problem solving, so these high performance bleach cleanable/harsh chemical safe textiles seem especially appropriate to celebrate this anniversary. Happy Birthday, Bauhaus!
