Carl and Emanuela Magnusson
  • Magnusson Collection
  • 5 patterns, 40 colors
  • Constructed with a minimum of
    65% natural or recycled fiber
  • High performance

The Magnusson collection is comprised of five upholstery patterns created by Carl Gustav Magnusson and Emanuela Frattini Magnusson which bridge the gap between geometry and artistry. Clear, unique colors are a core element of this high-performance corporate collection. Patterns Cairns, Malmo, Nagoya, Riga and Turin reflect an urban aesthetic and explore the concept of randomness in repetition.

Malmo features circles placed on an almost-perfect grid forming a matrix over which is scattered a layer of playful symbols. Nagoya’s graceful dotted lines and carefully placed, colorful focal points reference Japanese gardens. Its unique weave structure pays homage to traditional Japanese hand-crafted textiles. Packed with colorful stripes that flow beneath a grid, Turin exemplifies the emancipated geometric theme of this collection. Riga loosens the typical stark boundaries of a rigid stripe with its creative combination of yarns and weaves. The diamond motif of Cairns has a contemporary spin with tectonic shifts and bands of contrasting colors.

Carl Gustav Magnusson is one of the industry’s most acclaimed industrial designers. Swedish born, raised in Canada and educated in architecture, his career began with a design position in the office of Ray and Charles Eames* in Venice CA. In 1976 Magnusson joined Knoll, where he worked as director of design in Europe and North America for three decades. He is the recipient of innumerable industry awards, including most recently Contract Magazine’s 2012 Legend Award for Lifetime Achievement.

His New York based firm, CGM Design, serves leading furniture and automotive manufacturers in product development and design strategy. Clients include BMW, Knoll, Waterworks, Maharam and Teknion among others. In addition Carl collaborates frequently with his wife, designer Emanuela Frattini Magnusson. They have worked in tandem to create a wide range of top-selling products for Knoll and MoMA.

Emanuela Frattini Magnusson is the founder and principal of the award-winning, international firm EFM Design; a multi-disciplinary practice that spans architecture, interiors, product design, brand development, and graphics. Notable architectural projects include the Aqua townhouse development project in Miami, offices and showrooms for Knoll International, and a Times Square hotel and restaurant.

Emanuela is also the founder and principal designer of Articolo, a collection of European produced furniture, and the founder and CEO of Manù, a line of luxury leather goods designed by EFM. Emanuela is a Board Member and Treasurer of Operation Design, a not-for-profit that promotes design education in public schools.
