The Scandinavia 101 Collection
|
My Lineage is Scandinavian (all four grandparents were Swedish immigrants) and so a recent trip to Sweden, Finland and Denmark felt like going home. There is a discernibly unique atmosphere there, influenced especially by the northern light and the natural landscape. I was newly inspired to design a collection that might capture the nuance of the Scandinavian color palette, tradition and mood. The collection of four fabrics alludes to classic Scandinavian textiles from a bygone era: straightforward, sturdy hand woven goods made with hand spun and hand dyed yarns. Our colors take their cues from natural vegetable-dyed yarns I've collected over the years and include Scandinavia's most traditional colors: iron ore red, warm gold, soft blue and natural greys. Spun, woven with an irregular slub cotton yarn, invokes a handcrafted textile. I named Lina after a Swedish cousin; it's woven with heavy linen yarns in a polished satin weave. Woods is a modern take on traditional Scandinavian geometric patterns. The exceedingly soft Comfort uses a heathery textured yarn, homage to the handmade blankets that kept my ancestors warm.
