Ellie Moser's love of nature and the arts were cultivated at an early age by her family in southern Indiana near Louisville, Kentucky. She roamed the countryside with her father, whose career as a forester enabled him to share his knowledge of the natural world from a unique perspective of responsibility and stewardship. From her mother, Ellie inherited an affinity for the arts, and her early years were devoted to studying music, ballet and fine art. A particular talent, playing the cello, led Ellie to The Juilliard School in New York City from which she received her Bachelors degree in 2003. During this time, Ellie sought to expand and diversify her education with courses at Columbia University and she began frequenting New York's art museums and galleries.
Upon graduation, she shifted her focus away from music. Drawing and painting had risen instead to the forefront of her interests and she enrolled in an intensive year of study at SUNY's Fashion Institute of Technology, department of Textile and Surface Design. Woven textiles quickly captivated Ellie’s imagination and became her medium of choice.
By the end of the school year, she accepted her first design position in the New York studio of a respected American upholstery mill with a focus on contemporary patterns. As a designer with direct access to state-of-the-art Jacquard looms, Ellie was able to freely experiment with graphics and structure. For the next several years, she explored the boundaries of woven textile design and led the development of several new, environmentally friendly recycled yarn qualities.
In her own words, Ellie describes her role as a designer: “I love my job. Textile design fits my personality. It requires precision to grasp the intricate weave structures and to control the subtle manipulations of yarn texture and color. But other aspects of the job, such as generating new graphics, can be approached with the freedom and expressive abandon of a painter. It really is the best of both worlds.”
Ellie resides in Brooklyn and remains an avid enthusiast of the arts, regularly visiting art galleries and attending contemporary music and dance performances in the New York area.
